Fraternity Formal Locations: How to Choose, and Where Chapters Go

How do you choose a formal destination?

Start with what the chapter can do safely and afford, then pick the place. The best destination is one where your whole group can arrive the same day, stay together, and walk or ride a short distance to the venue.

Score each candidate city on six questions:

1. Can everyone get there safely in a day? For a charter bus, a driver may drive up to 10 hours after 8 consecutive hours off duty.[1] Longer trips need two drivers, an overnight stop or flights.
2. Are the hotel and venue close together? A short walk or a single bus loop beats a split across town.
3. Does it fit the budget? Compare hotel rates for your dates, not the city's reputation.
4. What else is happening that weekend? Big events fill hotels and raise rates.
5. What will the weather be? Check the season before you pick the month.
6. What are the local rules? Cities can license party buses and limos separately. Chicago, for example, requires limos and charter party buses to be licensed.[3]

Your headquarters' rules don't change out of town. Treat the trip like any chapter event, and register it if your HQ requires it.[4]

Should you plan an in-town or destination formal?

Choose in-town if cost and simplicity matter most, and a destination if the chapter wants a weekend away and can plan for it.

Where do chapters go for formal?

Cities that combine a walkable downtown, lots of hotels and venues, and a short trip from Greek-heavy campuses. Our guides cover three:

• New Orleans — a walkable French Quarter and downtown, streetcars and a deep supply of venues, within a bus ride of much of the South.
• Nashville — live-music venues, a compact downtown and a central location for Southeastern and Midwestern campuses.
• Chicago — a big-city formal for Midwestern chapters, with strict local licensing for party buses and limos.

In our September 2026 review of four formal planning companies' destination pages, New Orleans, Nashville and Savannah appeared on all four, and Chicago on three. That's a rough signal of where planners send chapters, not a ranking of attendance, which nobody publishes.

Beach, city or mountain?

Pick the setting for the weekend you want, then check its risks:

• City: the most venue and hotel choices, walkable nights and public transit. Watch for big-event weekends.
• Beach: a resort weekend, but check the season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30[2], so read the hotel's cancellation terms for storms before booking a fall beach formal.
• Mountain: cabins and lodges for a smaller, quieter formal. Confirm the drive in the dark, the venue's capacity and how guests get between buildings.

When should you avoid a destination?

When a big event is filling the city's hotels. Before you pick a weekend, check the city's event calendar for festivals, marathons and major games. A few 2027 examples:

Avoid exam weeks and holiday weekends at your own school too. And for Gulf and beach cities, weigh the hurricane season before booking in late summer or fall.

How did we choose these city guides?

We scored candidate cities in September 2026 on four weighted criteria, using our own research:

New Orleans, Nashville and Chicago scored highest. Savannah, a beach destination and a mountain destination are next, once we can verify enough local facts for each. Every city guide must have at least five facts verified from official sources before it's published.
